Do you know this feeling? One day melts into the next, and suddenly it feels like you’re just going through the motions. You have a hard time finding reasons to get out of bed in the morning and are unfulfilled in your relationships, career, and life. If this sounds familiar, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Many of my clients come to me when they feel like they’re in a rut in their relationships, career, and life. The good news is you can learn how to be intentional and live with purpose to experience joy and deep satisfaction.
What Does it Mean to Act with Intentionality?
To act with intentionality means to be purposeful in your actions. It means knowing what you want to achieve and taking steps to make it happen. It’s about being mindful of your thoughts, words, and actions and using them to create the life you want to live. When you act with intentionality, you take control of your life and steer it in the direction you want it to go; you are living with purpose and meaning.
We get “stuck” when there is a misalignment, and we find ourselves simply going through the motions. The key is to connect to the truest part of yourself and gain clarity on purpose, so you aren’t reacting to life but responding with intention. Intentional living is a journey, not a destination. It’s a way of being that you can practice every day. As you become more intentional in your actions, you will find that your life becomes more purposeful and fulfilling.
How to Be Intentional with 5 Steps You Can Do Today
We all want to live a life that feels meaningful, but how do you practice intentional living? While it can seem like some people are just naturally more successful than others, the truth is that anyone can learn how to be intentional and live with purpose. It starts with a desire and awareness, followed by a little bit of effort and planning. Here are five steps to get started.
1. Discover Who You Are
What is most important to you in life? What do you want to accomplish? When you know your values and priorities, it is easier to make choices that align with them. People who feel lost in life typically aren’t prioritizing what matters most. You can choose what’s important to you and create a life that prioritizes those things. Values give you a foundation, and your priorities give you direction.
How do you do this?
Start by taking inventory. You must know where you are now before you can begin to take steps toward where you want to be. So, write down what’s working and what’s not in all areas of your life. Then, begin to connect the dots and see WHO you are showing up as and WHERE to start shifting your approach and priorities. This is the first and most important step to begin living an intentional and purposeful life.
2. Create Your Purpose
You are a co-creator and have the power to live your life on purpose. You get to decide what you want to do, who you want to be, and how you want to spend your days. Purpose means something different to everyone. Some people find purpose by volunteering and helping those less fortunate. Others find purpose by investing time and energy into their interpersonal relationships with friends, co-workers, and neighbors. Still, others find purpose in a hobby or pastime that brings them joy. When you know your values and priorities, you can begin to create your definition of purpose and pursue it every day. There are layers to what makes a purposeful life, and yours is full of possibilities and wonder. Become more aware of the things that give you energy–sparks of enthusiasm–and follow them. Stay curious and allow these “breadcrumbs” to guide you to bringing fulfillment.
3. Set Goals and Work on Them
Learning how to be intentional takes more than setting goals. While that’s an essential step, working on and achieving your goals is most important. So many of us have things we want to accomplish, people we want to be, and even places we want to go and experience. However, only a few set, work on, and achieve the goals required to experience success and satisfaction. If you feel like your life is simply happening to you, it’s time to set and work toward goals so that you can live your life on purpose and with purpose.
4. Develop a Support Network
Surround yourself with people who will encourage and motivate you to be intentional and live with purpose. These people can provide accountability and help hold you to your word when you feel like giving up. It’s essential to have people like this in your life.
5. Invest in Life Coaching
If you feel like you’ve tried everything, but you’re still not sure how to be intentional and effective with your life, it’s time to invest in yourself. Life coaching is an excellent way to dive deep into what’s stopping you from living with purpose and find ways to overcome those obstacles. In my coaching practice, I believe everything starts from within–you need to reconnect with your true self, first and foremost. From there, you can tune into your higher being and discover the purpose that’s been inside of you all along. This journey of self-discovery is not only how to be intentional with your life, but it’s how to enjoy your life too.
