Are you feeling a little lost lately? Like you’ve lost touch with what’s important to you and what makes you you? If so, don’t worry–you are not alone. Many people find themselves in that position at some point in their lives. Keep reading for seven tips for reconnecting with yourself and regaining your sense of purpose.
What Does It Mean to Reconnect with Yourself?
Reconnecting with yourself means pausing, listening, and tuning into your body and intuition. There is a tremendous amount of advice and “noise” we must filter through each day. This “noise” can often become so overwhelming that it has us spinning in several directions, feeling like we’ve lost our way.
Reconnecting with yourself is the process of creating a solid foundation from which you can make decisions and stay on your unique path with clarity and ease. When you’re connected to your true self, the “noise” becomes quieter, and you can see a way forward that aligns with your goals, values, and purpose.
In my coaching practice, I call the process of connecting with your true self “Discovering Your Captain.” Your Captain is your inner leader. It’s the part inside of you that is clear and knowing. He or she is always in command and leads you towards the full expression of your life’s purpose. Your Captain knows your life is as it should be at this moment and, at the same time, holds the paradox of wanting more. He or she knows your strengths, talents, gifts, and limitations and has room for all of you. Your Captain believes in you and, no matter what, he or she holds you tenderly with gentleness, compassion, and infinite patience. Reconnecting with yourself means discovering your Captain and living from a place of certainty in who you are.
How Do You Emotionally Reconnect with Yourself?
Emotionally reconnecting with yourself requires emotional intelligence, and building the skill of emotional intelligence starts by reconnecting with yourself. EQ is now a more commonly used term, yet many still struggle to understand what it means and how to become more emotionally intelligent. Reconnecting with yourself emotionally requires pausing, becoming aware, and listening to what your feelings are telling you. However, feelings can be scary, so we often avoid and numb our emotions. When we do that, it becomes much harder to connect with ourselves and others.
Acknowledging your emotions and staying curious about their presence is the first step in growing emotional intelligence. When you pay attention to the emotions that arise, you can respond vs. react to whatever is evoking your feelings. This is an incredibly powerful resource that’s immediately accessible to you. It enables you to face the “noise” of the world with clarity and intention. Of course, this is all easier in theory and takes practice, which is why I focus on helping clients reconnect with their most authentic selves and emotions that come up in coaching sessions.
7 Tips for Reconnecting with Yourself on a Deeper Level
If you want to reconnect with yourself on a deeper level this year, there are practical things you can start doing every day. Follow these seven tips for reconnecting with your truest self daily.
1. Sleep
Sleep is vital to your health and healing. Sleeping restores your body and allows your mind to rest. To receive seven to eight hours of quality sleep every night, you should stop using all electronic devices at least 30 minutes to an hour before bed. Your phone emits blue light, which increases alertness at night. Through news and social media apps, your phone also holds the key to overwhelm, fear, confusion, judgments, and more. To quiet your mind both physically and emotionally, stop using your phone before bed and focus on preparing yourself for peaceful rest.
2. Wake
When you wake up, the first things you think about set the tone for your entire day. Rather than reaching for your phone first thing in the morning, pause. Breathe in gratitude and set the stage for the thoughts. Stay silent and listen to your body to find out what you need for the day. Take note of your emotions and direct your thoughts to a positive place before your feet even hit the floor.
3. Move
Your body loves movement. In the morning, stretch and connect with your body physically. This doesn’t need to be an hour-long workout. You can do a quick grounding meditation or go on a morning stroll. Move in whatever way makes your body feel good first thing in the morning.
4. Write
I know your days are busy. There’s so much to do. But the mind’s busyness can easily distract you from connecting with yourself on a deeper level. To avoid this, spend time each morning clearing your mind by writing down everything you need to get done in the day. Prioritize your responsibilities and focus on the “must-dos” before the “want-tos.” Everything else is a bonus.
5. Play
Connecting with your inner child–the place inside of you that holds joy and wisdom–is essential to reconnecting with yourself emotionally. The best way to connect with your inner child is to find ways to be playful throughout the day. Unfortunately, as adults, we often forget to pursue joy when we’re busy pursuing success or achievements. But when you focus on not taking things so seriously, you experience a lightheartedness that helps you show up as your truest self.
6. Connect
Reconnecting with yourself also requires you to connect with others because your relationships relate to how well you connect with yourself. When you move through life discounted from yourself, you’ll have a much harder time connecting with those around you. Find space to spend quality time with the people that matter to you, whether it’s your spouse, children, co-workers, employees, or friends.
7. Love
Reconnecting with yourself requires love–loving yourself and sharing that love with the world around you. It starts from within. You must come to know yourself in every aspect and learn to love every part of who you are. From that place, you can connect with others in a deep and meaningful way, positively impacting their story because of the connection you first have with yourself.
Go easy on yourself and remember, the smallest actions done frequently make the greatest change. Stay curious and have fun with the self-discovery. Reconnecting with yourself is the process of doing small things each day that have a significant impact over time.
